BABY GUT HEALTH 101: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

November 25, 2019

A few months ago I shared my desire of wanting to use an infant probiotic with all of you. This was before Parker joined our family and now as a mom of 4 children, I am here to say that gut health is important. I have experienced the ups and downs of having a newborn 4 times and still have so much more to learn. However, I have noticed that Parker spits up the least amount of all my babies. The one thing we do differently from our other babies is the use of an infant probiotic.

A few months ago, I learned that 9 out of 10 American babies are born with too much bad bacteria. Bad bacteria in a baby’s gut can lead to a higher risk of autoimmune and metabolic issues like colic, eczema, allergies, diabetes, and obesity. Moms naturally pass good bacteria onto their babies. However, due to medical advancements, that good bacteria may not get passed on. Antibiotics and C-sections have interrupted the transfer of good bacteria from mother to baby during childbirth. I shared before how my mind was blown by this information. I initially thought because I was ‘healthy’, my baby would be receiving all of the same immunities as myself. I learned that infant gut health is a bit more complicated than I wanted to believe. Did you know the first six months of a baby’s life are crucial for child development and can have an effect on stomach issues as our baby grows? This means autoimmune and metabolic issues like colic, eczema, allergies, diabetes, and obesity could form at this time. I didn’t realize eczema and allergies could be a sign of bad gut health. My third struggles with skin issues similar to eczema and I wish I would have known about Evivo sooner. I wonder if Evivo would have helped him? I wonder if he would still have skin issues? These are the questions I ask myself but I am happy I know about it now.

What is Evivo? Evivo is a probiotic that contains B. infantis, a good strain of bacteria which replaces the bad bacteria in your baby’s gut. Evivo comes in the form of a powder that you mix with breast milk and use with a syringe to feed to baby through his/her mouth.

I encourage you to ask your pediatrician about the benefits of using an infant probiotic at least during the first six months of your baby’s life. I feel more proactive in exploring my options for our fourth baby. It has given me more confidence in being a parent! I want to know about every single piece of information I can get my hands on when it comes my way to keep my children healthy and happy.

Why Evivo? Evivo is the only brand of baby probiotics clinically proven to restore a baby’s gut to its original, natural state (the one with the good bacteria present) by capturing all the special carbohydrates from your breast milk that otherwise might be wasted. If you are anything like me, you may think that baby doesn’t need anything except breast milk to stay healthy. Unfortunately, your baby may not be receiving all the goodness if their gut doesn’t contain B. infantis. This is why I think it is worth speaking to your baby’s pediatrician.

How to use Evivo? Keep the packets stored in the freezer for up to a year or store in the fridge for about 30 days (check the expiration date of course). You want to be sure to add Evivo to your breast milk in a syringe to ensure your baby is finishing the probiotic. I do not recommend mixing Evivo into a bottle, because if it is not finished, the full amount will not be administered. Saving and reheating a bottle may affect product quality, which is why it is not recommended to put in a bottle for feedings. NEVER heat Evivo directly either. Breast milk should first be warmed and then add Evivo in after the desired temperature is reached. I understand that it may feel like you have an overwhelming amount of information being shared with you from all corners of the world. Literally, everyone has advice to share when you have a baby (I know this all too well). Keep a peaceful mind in knowing that you are your baby’s biggest advocate. Talk to your pediatrician and see if this may be something to consider.
